For a home service business, the map pack is the whole game. When someone searches “plumber near me” or “garage door repair,” the three results in the map box get the calls. Everything below them is an afterthought. If you are not in that box, you are invisible at the exact moment a customer is ready to pay.
The good news is that ranking there is not luck. It is a system, and most of your competitors are doing it badly. Here is how it actually works.
Start with the Google Business Profile
Your Google Business Profile is the single most important asset in local search, more important than your website for the map pack specifically. Get these right:
- Correct primary category. Pick the one that matches your core service, not a vague catch all.
- Consistent name, address and phone everywhere it appears online. Google trusts businesses whose details match across the web.
- Real photos, updated regularly. Profiles with recent photos get more clicks and Google notices.
- Services and service areas filled in completely, matching the language customers actually use.
A half filled profile is the most common reason a good local business is stuck below a worse one.
Then the reviews
Reviews are both a ranking factor and the thing that makes a customer choose you over the profile next to yours. What matters:
- Volume and recency. A steady trickle of new reviews beats a big burst two years ago.
- Responses. Reply to every review, good or bad. It signals an active business and Google rewards it.
- Keywords in reviews. When customers mention the service and the city, that content helps you rank for it.
The practical move is to make asking for a review automatic, right after the job is done, with a one tap link. Done consistently, this compounds.
Now the website: a page for every city you serve
Here is where most home service companies leave money on the table. They have one page that lists ten cities, and it ranks for none of them. Google wants a real, dedicated page for each place you serve, with genuine content, not a template with the city name swapped in.
One real page per city, ranking on its own, is usually the highest return SEO work a service business can do. It is exactly why we build dedicated location pages, for example for a garage door company across Houston and Dallas, each ranking independently.
The technical foundation nobody sees
None of the above works if the site underneath is broken. The foundation:
- Speed on mobile. Your customer is on a phone, often stressed, often on a bad connection. A slow page loses the call before it loads.
- Click to call everywhere. On an emergency service site, the phone number is the product. It belongs in the header, sticky on mobile, repeated at every scroll.
- LocalBusiness schema. Structured data that tells Google exactly what you do, where, and how to contact you.
- Fast, indexable location pages tied to each Google Business Profile.
This is the work that separates the businesses in the map box from the ones on page two. If you want the full picture of how we approach it, see our technical SEO service and our home services page.
Do not forget paid, if the math works
While your local SEO builds, Google Local Services Ads can put you above everything else with a Google Guaranteed badge. For emergency services they often outperform standard search ads, because you appear first at the moment of need. Setup includes a verification and licensing step that trips most companies up, so it is worth doing properly.
What to do next
Search your main service plus “near me” on your phone, from outside your own office. Are you in the map pack? If not, the fastest wins are usually a fully completed Google Business Profile, a review request that runs automatically, and a real page for each city you serve.
